What Your Librarian Might Not Tell You

images3Once again, there is something so cool for teens that adults can’t help but get their hands on it.  “Hunger Games,” a new novel by Suzanne Collins, is the next big thing in young adult (that’s you!) literature.  The book is getting rave reviews all over the internet and lots of attention in magazines.  Bookstores are selling them faster than Soccer Moms stole “Twilight.”

Hunger Games is set in the not-so-distant future, and America is now a dictatorship  overrun by reality television.  The most popular event is the Hunger Games, an annual kill-or-be-killed contest.  Each year, teens are chosen by lottery to participate in a fight-to-the-death match.  It’s like The Super Bowl meets “Survivor,” only there is literally only one survivor.  Yikes!  Katniss, our heroine, steps up to the plate when her younger sister is chosen.  Her fighting partner is Gale and, of course, he is in love with Katniss.  Tension and potential heartbreak run rampant among the action.  Their district hasn’t won the Hunger Games in over 30 years, so the pressure is on here.  And you thought a pop quiz in math class was bad!

Have you read it?  Let us know what you think.  Any thoughts for who should play Katniss and Gale in the movie?

Sounds like a really good book, but also reminds me of a Doctor Who episode that aired ages ago. Although the difference remains that the episode was set much further in the future and on Earth and many other planets. But the basic concept remains the same.

I picked this book up at the Book Expo in L.A. over the summer thinking it would be great to stock at my kids’ store. But then it got mixed up in my piles, and I read it myself. It’s fantastic. I would recommend it for any kid ages 12 and up.

Funny thing you say that “Bookstores are selling them faster than Soccer Moms stole ‘Twilight.’” Stephenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight Series, suggested this book on her website. Just an interesting tidbit.

Sounds a lot like a manga called “Battle Royale” if anyone know what I’m talkin about. Except not as gruesome.
P.S. No I did not read that manga.

This book sounds wonderful! Once I finish reading my 14 lined up books, I’ll being my search on this one! Unless I get City of Glass first! Or any other awesome book I’ve been waiting for! This actually reminds me of Pendragon: The Quillan Games. And I’m actually waiting for the next Pendragon book too ;) I’m a recently turned book fanatic.

I heard about this through a friend also! She loved it and I intend to read it after I go through my 100+ book list, or maybe sooner and I’ll put off the list for another few days.

Hey Josh! My name is Kali! I go to Eastern Hancock High School and I had a great time listening to you speak! You did a great job, but I’m sure you know that! I have read The Hunger Games and I have to say that it is one of my favorite books! Truly amazing! I just have to say one thing though. Peeta Mellark is Katniss’s fighting partner who is in love with her, and Gale is her hunting parter back at home. I just wanted to mention that. Well, thanks again for speaking at my school I know my friend Autumn enjoyed it just as much as I did!
