My whole life i have been working up to college great grades in high school great GPA but it feels like im the only one struggling all of my friends love it and i hate the thought of college cause i just cant seem to get it. i feel so alone even though i have so much support. i know college is not for some people but i know its for me. it has to be. im hoping you can give me some advice on how to stop beating myself up and get though college as hard as it is for me.

Yo Jess,

College IS hard.

Saving money IS hard.

Working out IS hard.

Love IS hard.

anything worth doing, isn’t’ easy.  that’s why most people don’t do it.

you aren’t most people.

remind yourself of the definition of discipline:

doing what you have to do, so you can do what you want to do

bust it in college for 3-4 years, and then its game on.  you call the shots.  you do what you’re good at.

college is hard for your friends too.  even the ones who don’t have the guts to admit it.

find some friends who are open about it, and talk through that with em.  it will help.

In your face, but on your side…

Dear Jess,
I also have problems with school even though i am just in 8th grade. I find it really helps just to talk about to some friends and ask for help. Even if you are embarrassed you just need to get help even if it is just asking someone to watch your dog so you can concentrate better. Last year i could not concentrate at all and i failed algebra 3 quarters straight and i found that it was so much easier once i got help and talked to my friend who is a absolute genius and she helped me get my grade up.

Hey jess,

I also just finished my first semester of college, and am in a similar boat as you. I bombed all but one of my classes, and that was the one class that wasn’t related to my major. Luckily, at the end of the semester I had had Christmas break to get myself together and cope with my screw-ups. What worked for me was examining what I had done wrong, what had distracted me, and what I did right. I figured out ways to correct what I had done wrong (like going to class), eliminated or reduced distractions (no more TV in my room), and prepared to use what I did right to my advantage (go to more tutoring sessions).

Josh isn’t kidding when he says college is tough. Just know that millions of people have gotten through it before you. It’s not impossible. Just stick with it and you’ll get through it.

Jess,
Don’t beat yourself up about not getting great grades. Also, don’t make college harder on yourself than it has to be. Check out your profs before signing up for class on Ratemyprofesor.com Some teachers will make things harder on you, but if you can find the really good ones, it’ll help you enjoy class and (hopefully) do better. And the first semester of college is a gigantic adjustment! This semester will probably be a lot easier for you. Good Luck!
