Hey Josh, How can I teach my mom Guitar Hero?

Hey Josh,

I’m trying to teach my mom how to play guitar hero. do u have any ideas for help?

Kendra

Kendra,

STEP 1.

Behold the following video.

STEP 2.

Please digest the following knowledge:

1) When she asks you to stop video taping her.  Say “of course mom” and keep rolling. This could very well be your big YouTube break into feature length directing.

2) Don’t start her on expert. Are you kidding me!?!? No more than three buttons and for the love of sweet and sour chicken no combos. My suggestion? SLOW RIDE.

3) Practice makes improvement

4) Encourage her. Your first instinct will be to mock her inability to shred.  Don’t do that. The bountiful reward will be yours when you can talk your mom into playing an expert level song for your friends as their jaws drop with disbelief slash jealousy.

Seriously.  Please send me AT LEAST a picture of this going down.  I/people who read this site, would love to see it.

In your face, but on your side.

Unfortunately I am horrible at guitar hero. I have played it many many times and I just cannot get better. Sorry I can’t help out on this one.

Definitely have her start really easy. Also, don’t be afraid to show her a couple of tricks, and give her examples.

if you have access to it, another thing that might help is having her sing on Rock band. The sing-up-and-down-with-the-line is a lot simpler than trying to get her to focus on the screen, strumming, and hitting buttons all at the same time (essentially multi-tasking at an extremely fast rate).

Also, no matter what happens, make sure to have a lot of patience and don’t try to rush her or make her do something that is harder than she is capable of. Keeping her confidence up will work wonders.

Hey! There’s already some great advice up above, but I think that you should start her off on Medium. It’s not too far of a jump. That’s where I started off. It’s not very much harder than Easy. The only differences are you have chords to play and the blue notes. This is really easy and almost anyone can play this difficulty. After she gets used to playing on Medium, you can have her play a song on Hard in Practice. Maybe, like Josh said, Slow Ride. It’s really easy because most of the chords are held instead of released immediately. Slow Ride is a good song to introduce someone to a new difficulty because it’s the easiest for any difficulty.

I really suck at Guitar hero, even on easy.
I have rockband and I think it is a lot easier,
I can play on medium (I know I suck).
I’m not sure if it’s just because I’m used to it, or because its easier.
But I’d recommend having her try that first.

This just made me laugh. I should try it on my parents, or for that matter my friends… :P
