The HEY JOSH Community Service Project

I have an idea. But I need your help.

I’ve been thinking about the idea of us (me, you, the random HEY JOSH fan in Switzerland- hi Lukas) doing a community service project together.  But completely online.

I’ve got a few ideas, but nothing is really slapping me in the face with brilliance at the moment.

Maybe we could….

Flood somebody with Happy Birthday Emails
eBay our used sweaters and give the money to a good cause
Write letters to a random elementary school class

I would love to hear your ideas.  What could we do? I’d like it to be something fun, easy, and that would make a difference.

Here’s how it will work.

1. You comment below with brilliant ideas.
2. After a week of submissions, I’ll pick out three ideas.
3. We shall vote.
4. We shall do.

Legit.

We Have Spoken

Well this might be a little late but… February is Women’s Cardiac Care month. Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women. The saddest part is that no one really knows (it’s not as publicized as say breast cancer awareness (also very important cause)). One neat thing to do could be sell red clothes (the red dress is the symbol for the cause) and then donate the money to Women’s Cardiac Care.

Also, I am a huge supporter of suicide awareness and prevention, my father killed himself ten and a half years ago. If you could find some way to help with that cause, it would mean the world to me.

Thanks Josh, you are amazing.

How about creating a website for a non-profit agency? Keeping in mind that funding is always the first need on their list, so including a paypal type system to the account would be awesome!
Keep up the good work – this site ROCKS!

Help save the animals!
It’s easy! Go to http://www.savethemanatee.org or http://www.worldwildlife.org to adopt an animal. It’s really quite fun. I adopted a manatee and was able to pick which manatee I wanted. His name is Floyd and he lives in Florida, he’s really fat! As a perk, you receive a newsletter about 4 times a year updating you on any manatee outings! Plus, simply saying you adopted a manatee is an ice-breaker! At the WWF site, you can adopt penguins, pandas, polar bears…anything! It is esoteric knowledge that one can adopt an animal, so it would be awesome if word got out! It’s a great way to help protect endangered species and promote conservation efforts and have fun doing it.
Another idea: Sponsor a child for less than a dollar a day with savethechildren.org. We could form hometown teams and see how much each state can raise. Similarly, there are organizations that need care packages. The same idea applies here, as well.

I really like the idea of bombarding someone with emails, to tell you the truth. And when I saw that, it made me think of doing that type of thing to children in the hospital with long-term illnesses. Like Leukemia patients, for example. If you picked a bunch of different Leukemia patients, you could have everyone assigned to a certain child, and we could all send them uplifting cards or letters in the mail saying that even though we don’t know them, we care. I know it’s not really helping a national problem or anything, but I believe that sometimes it’s the small things that count. And to tell you the truth, if I got some random letters in the mail from people that cared about me, it would make my day. So it may not be some fantastic idea to help a big portion of the nation or something like that, but I think it would be really awesome.

I really like Mona’s idea. I’d like to feed off of it a little bit and include your idea also. I liked your idea of selling something on ebay, BUT that can be tricky with collaborating the funds. So creating a non-profit website and selling things from that site would eliminate the ‘middle-man’. It’s great in that this could be a short-term or long-term service. It would be fun to just sell some little random things that we might have around the house. I know personally I enjoy little gadgets/items, so supporting a good cause and acquiring something useful in return is a win-win situation. Since this is a ‘community service’ idea, I think giving the funds to children in a school in need would be great. Not just to the school, but to the kids directly, in something they could enjoy and benefit from. We all know giving money to a school for kids, may not always go to the kids. It could be something fun like a playground etc. The community starts with the kids.

As I love the other ideas, I think doing something on a bigger scale would make an impact. Bigger then Jennie’s idea, Bigger then Haley’s! As Mona Frye’s Idea is great, I myself have expirence with web design, and its not an easy task, espically to someone you cannot meet in person. But that raises my idea. What about doing something for a non-profit company/organization. I’ll think of an actual idea of what to do for them soon

I really like Jennie’s idea, to be honest.
My freind had to go to the hospital a long time, and she said the only thing that kept her from going crazy were the emails her freinds were all sending her.
Maybe we could take it a step further.
My freind Lauren knows from personal experience one can only take so much of being in the same place for such a long time.
Wouldn’t you think some of those kids got a little bored?
Maybe everyone could pitch in and sell old video games, toys, ect. and buy these kids some things to do, because while’ll we’re all running around enjoying life to the fullest, those kids can’t.
Maybe if we could contact a certain hospital, like St.Judes, and see if we could get a list of the kids names and their birthdays, we can not only give these kids some penpals to talk to when they’re down, but something to open on that special day.
Even if it’s something like getting the kids a DS or a gameboy for their birthday, it’s something to do, isn’t it? While their parents are working hard to make ends meet, I think we should do something, too!
I don’t know about you guys, but I think it’d be pretty interesting talking to one of the kids tough enough to survive through all that.
Penpals, gifts.
The little things in life make a major difference.

You and your friends and fans could help the Foster Care Association of Oklahoma provide school supplies for every foster child in Oklahoma or the United States,if you want to expand,in our 2009 project called Supplies for Success. Bombard Oklahoma with gift certificates to Staples, Office Depot, Target, Wal-mart and any other place that sells supplies so we could provide the tools necessary to succeed in school and in life.

How about donating to a charity such as Feed the Children or Orphan Foundation of America??

POSTED BY: Khalea on February 17th, 2009 7:03 pm

This is super simple, but you could always promote sites such as thebreastcancersite.com, thehungersite.com, etc. They just require clicking each day. It’s simple to do, and I’m sure you have enough followers that it could make a difference.

we all know obviousely that they are killed but there is much more!
I had no idea that such cruletys where even leagal.
so lets spread the awareness! we all have read the food labels on cerial, and found out where out little brothers toys are made, so lets find out togeather what our food does before it lands on our plate!
because really, the knowlage will change the way you look at the whole world!
Onother idea is to start a site where we can submit or ideas to you (the awsome dazeling fantabulose hey josh!)and you could make links on that site to explane our cause and how to help

We could all send cards to people in a nursing home, couldn’t tell you which one because there’s the location thing, where everyone else lives. For me, Duluth, Minnesota, I would send it to Benedictine Health Center, my great grandma just got out of there, and I noticed, not very many people have visitors or just get well cards. So I thought we could mail cards to people. Just plain cards so they can go to anyone!

Yes this is Kristin again, but after reading jackiecakes’s post, I totally agree with it!!! We should do it!

I love Mona’s idea. It’d be great if we could have assigned children to be pen pals with or something :) but yeah, basically mona’s idea is the best so far. or snail mail cards :)

Ok, new idea, great idea…
How about we make a combined effort, make a commerical, see if we can get maybe some Public Service Announcement space on a ch. somewhere, and make a video full on home video’s about a cause. Like breast cancer awareness or children in hospitals or something anyone wanna build off this?

What about reaching out to the youth, younger than the troubled teens. The children that come from troubled homes, or are just having a difficult time with something, even if it’s not to personal. Sometimes they just need someone to listen to them, and our communities are not doing that. I grew up in a town of elderly people, and my best friend was my older brother. I felt that there was nothing to do and no one to speak to, it even made me feel unappreciated. It is still like that today in many communities and the youth needs reaching out to.

At the moment, there’s not enough brain space left to create another idea for this week, so just count me (most likely) for the project/service, if I can do it, I will – Hi to all! (Josh you crack me up!)

How about bombarding small town prevention coalitions(Springfield,VT had 538 students and 60 teachers for grades 9-12) with encouraging words that will pump them up and help with the business of cheering students to make good choices? See our facebook – we’re friends with JOSH!
;o)
