Thank You Harry Ainlay HS!

photo-1One of my friends…upon hearing I was traveling to speak in Alberta, Canada actually uttered the following

“Well that’s cool man, but will you have a translator?”

I keep good company.

I had a great day at said high school.  It’s a great school and the students are gifted haiku-ers as well.

I spotted the following on the stage behind me

PUT THE FUNK IN THE DUNK.

All schools should aspire to be so moving in their sports related poetry.

Give my best to the plant I left behind on New Caprica.  (huh?) exactly.

Here’s the videos I referenced today:

I was at harry ainlay and heard your speech twice, you are an amazing speaker and really helped me think about alot of things in my life. Normally I can always keep a smile on my face but the smile was fading for the past few days and hearing you speak just brought it back!

POSTED BY: Scott on February 19th, 2009 7:02 pm

hey josh ~ thanks so much for coming to Ainlay to speak. That made my week! What were once “just words” will now become actions for me. Thank you.

PS: my last name is “Gan” and I was laughing again today at the bus stop about your joke on naming your kid “pirate ship” and so someone suggested I name my kid “Tobo Gan”. LOL

Hey Josh!

You were amazing! You were by far the greatest motivational speaker I have ever heard! I hope you enjoyed Canada, and thanks for showing me that it is important to go beyond average!!

Hey Josh!
Thank you for coming to Harry Ainlay HS. I can now leave with a fonder memory of this school that I go through almost the whole city to get to everyday.
I am glad you found my cow patterned pencil case odd. Yes it IS a pencil case.
& it’s okay I forgive you for picking on me! However..I am starting to believe that maybe..just maybe..something bad WILL happen.
Just kidding. So I remember you saying you were from California and well I have a few friends there and I showed them your website! One of them goes to Berkeley too. I wonder which UC college you went to?
Either way imma stop rambling, you were truly hilarious and I LOVE this site, being a graphics/web designer, I LOVE it!
Thanks for the inspiring speech. Well not really because I am already different than everyone else..starting with having cow pencil case..and well yeah that’s me I like cows.
Keep speaking! You brightened my day :) I will never pay you to shut up!

Hey Josh,

That was a kick-ass speech. All i could think was why is every adult like this. If every adult was like a kid at heart we would have an awesome place. But of course like you said, misfortune is something we can’t stop. It really made me put some things into perspective. Keep making speeches not sound like a class. :)

Hey Josh just comin on here to say I loved your speech today at Ainlay. I’m really glad to see that even though you had a difficult childhood you pulled through and managed to become such a great person. You’re an inspiration to all of us, well then again, thats probably why you work as an inspirational speaker haha.

On a side note, has anyone ever told you you look exactly like Todd in Weeding Crashers (Keir O’Donnell)? You know, the guy who paints the portrait of Vince Vaughn.

POSTED BY: kaylyn on February 19th, 2009 11:47 pm

so I had a spare during my grade assembly, but I decided to go to the assembly anyways, and I’m glad I did. Everything you said made sense, and I could relate to alot of it. Thanks for coming to Ainlay, and keep doing what you’re doing.

Hello. How strange to have others from my school writing comments on this page, considering i recognize names of others who commented.

anyway, it was cool that you came to talk to us. (even though i had to sit on the floor and the kid next to me defiantly ate garlic hummus before he squished next to me) And i appreciated that it was light and funny and wasn’t all “your life is like a circle of light that you have to reflect on others” or whatever. it was pretty motivational to know that someone who came from nothing made a good person out of himself.Honestly, I feel lucky to be me.

well. im not really sure how to end these types of comments. iv actually been sitting here trying to type a casual “ok, well…ill probably never see you again” and trying to find the least creepy way to say “i saw you walk out of the school at lunch in a black coat”.
however, i fail on both accounts.

POSTED BY: [k] on February 20th, 2009 7:24 pm

Hey Josh,
You were honestly the best motivational speak i have ever had. Everything you said was amazing. You made everyone laugh and you were able to keep our attention. Which was because you were entertaining. Im sorry to hear about your tough childhood but look where it got you. You drew from your experiences and gave us the honest truth about life. Because of you i am going to try my best to live an above average life..

Thanks for everything you said at the assembly. I wish remember your speech for the rest of my life. You motivated me to be a better person.

hey josh,
i’m glad that you could come talk to us at ainlay and i think it’s cool that you really used the “funk in the dunk” saying.

POSTED BY: c~~ on February 21st, 2009 2:19 pm

hey Josh,
I was one of the many harry ainlay kids who say the speech.

There actually is a reason behind the ‘fro basketballs and the put the funk in the dunk banner. We host a provincal (in us speak that would be “state”)basketball tournament. Hence the banner and the ‘fro ball

Hey josh! Thanks for coming to Harry Ainlay. Your motivational thing was pretty sweet. I usually zone out during these things, but you managed to keep my attention. I congratulate you on that. The funniest thing was that most of my friends were complaining about how boring the motivational speakers were and how stupid it is that we have to sit on the ground to hear to something nobody really listens to. But when you came up on stage, they all stoppped complaining and they were like “oh, he’s hot!” So I think you succeeded in getting their attention too lol!(They will kill me if they found out what I wrote, but who cares) Nicely done!

POSTED BY: imdabomb on February 21st, 2009 8:51 pm

I honestly was about to cry during your talk. I feel like I had a lot of horrible experiences when I was young, and they’re things that I constantly dwell on, and I needed someone to give me that whole “suck it up” talk. Obviously you weren’t directly talking to me, but I can completely relate to a lot of the things you say and you helped me forget about my problems for once and since that day I’ve been trying to make other people’s days better because I’m a part of it =) Thank you so so so much, I don’t think you’ll ever understand really. But thanks.
