The Petition to Stop Facebook Cartoon Tagging

I was tagged on Facebook recently. Sweet.

Although instead of a picture of me holding up my 5th grade book-it trophy what I saw was a line up of cracked out eighties cartoon characters with my tag over one entitled “The Slow One.”

Thanks “dear friend” who tagged me.  Whoops I just deleted you.

Let us examine the image that has swept the FB super highway:

fb-cartoon

So many questions come to mind with this photo.

Why does “The Pimp” have a cross around his neck and why is the “Church Girl” wearing a toupee?

Are these rejects from School House Rock?

Why is the “Ladies Man” a purple triangle?

There is a bigger issue here. This might just be me…but why are we bothering our friends with these lame labels?

I mean think about it, how many of your friends actually look like a half melted jelly bean? When we see we’ve been tagged in a photo we get our hopes up to see an image of us with friends enjoying a good time only to be hit with a cartoon card of Dr. Seuss rejects.

This madness must stop. Join our cause. Comment below and show the world you’re not “The Lazy One”

POSTED BY: Ruhl on March 12th, 2009 3:28 pm

I hate those! Yeah it’s cool to be like, “what do they think of me” but you’re still let down knowing that it wasn’t actually a picture of you…

POSTED BY: Samantha on March 12th, 2009 4:22 pm

oh yes. those things are slow if you ask me… what the beans!?!?!?! have you seen the anime ones? those ones are even worse!!!! ahhhhhhh!!!!!! save us all!!!!

POSTED BY: kellie on March 12th, 2009 4:33 pm

They are a parody of the popular UK kids books Mr Men, not Dr Suess rejects. Not all things are American inspired you know….

POSTED BY: Pete McM on March 12th, 2009 4:37 pm

OMG! I have yet to be tagged in one of those and I pray that I dont! They are the most retarded things people could ever tag you in. I mean seriously who even thought of it??

POSTED BY: Jessica on March 12th, 2009 4:52 pm

I endorse this message and will pimp it on my facebook page.

Count me in for the “Labels are Lame” campaign – 9 times out of 10 they’re wrong anyway… and besides, I look nothing like a jelly bean.

i agree…labels ruin the world..someone once asked me to try an entire day without labelling anyone or anything..try it ..its not as easy as it sounds!

POSTED BY: braden on March 12th, 2009 5:14 pm

theyre kinky

POSTED BY: dave on March 12th, 2009 5:18 pm

i agree

POSTED BY: mo on March 12th, 2009 5:29 pm

Stop the madness.

POSTED BY: David on March 12th, 2009 5:37 pm

I agree. I hate being labeled. I have not been tagged in that cartoon picture yet. But I’m sure I will sometime. Every time I log onto Facebook now I see the picture with something that says “(name)” has been tagged in a photo. That photo would be that cartoon picture. I hate it. NEEDS TO STOP!!! Labeling people isn’t cool. And if you do actually think about it, how many people do you know that look like ANY of those pictures?

POSTED BY: Kristin Johnson on March 12th, 2009 5:37 pm

this is ridiculous. your honestly starting a petition to stop these things? i didnt know anyone really cared that much? anyone who thinks so highly of themselves that they cant be poked fun at just once needs help. anyone who is honestly disgruntled by the cartoon tagging needs to just realize that its just a joke and people are only having fun

POSTED BY: alex on March 12th, 2009 5:42 pm

and another thing. people take this so literaly, yeah, we know that you dont really look like a jelly bean, or a triangle is it really burning you that.

POSTED BY: alex on March 12th, 2009 5:44 pm

well its not like your friends are labeling you for reals! its just something that is fun to do with your buddies.

POSTED BY: kaitlynn on March 12th, 2009 5:50 pm

finally! someone gets were im coming from

POSTED BY: alex on March 12th, 2009 5:52 pm

I think this petition is totally stupid. It gets you absolutly nowhere. But I dont fully disagree. People who are tagging how people are?? You guys are just wasting your time on something that doesnt matter, and dont get all upset if it happens to you. It just proves that the person who did it has nothing better to do with their life than tag other people.

POSTED BY: aimee on March 12th, 2009 6:06 pm

Yeah, they’re little cartoons and they’re just meant to poke fun and mean no harm but remember the saying “Sticks and stones will break your bones but words’ll never hurt me” that could not be further from the truth. Words can be the most potent thing in your arsenal. They can hurt more than any physical injury.

Yes, they are just supposed to be for fun, but what happens when your friend couldn’t possibly be in a crummy situation and they see that and they get ‘the slow one’ or ‘the annoying one’, that wouldn’t make them feel any better.

Sometimes people can takes jokes out of context, whether like that, or they just get plain offended. It’s just best to avoid such situations in the first place.

POSTED BY: Samantha on March 12th, 2009 6:13 pm

omg. i hate these things. this one girl tagged me in like 5 DIFFERENT ONES! this one. pokemon. the celebrities. i mean theres more too. its so pathetic.

POSTED BY: Claire on March 12th, 2009 6:18 pm

most annoying thing ever!

Not quite as bad as the ‘25 things’ phase…

Im sure it will pass.. but what’s next? that’s what scares me!

POSTED BY: Christina on March 12th, 2009 6:28 pm

I agree 100%. If I see another one of those I might just delete my entire facebook account completely!

POSTED BY: Katie R on March 12th, 2009 8:51 pm

I hate these! Some of them don’t bother me so much, but someone said that I was the arrogant one! That’s funny because my self confidence, well I actually don’t have any.

POSTED BY: Haley on March 12th, 2009 9:48 pm

There are so dumb, and it pisses me off that people comment so much on them. So what they tagged you as something you aren’t? Get over it!

POSTED BY: Tyson J on March 12th, 2009 10:43 pm

I hvaent been tagged in anything. My high school is obsessed with it. My boyfriend said I wasnt tagged because “nobody likes me.” WHAT A JERK!

POSTED BY: No name on March 13th, 2009 11:23 pm

I completely agree. We don’t like to be labeled, or put into a box, but we don’t mind doing it to others.

POSTED BY: Rachel on March 14th, 2009 5:02 pm

if my previous comment ever pops up, my bad, just ignore one of them. But the other one seems to have disinegrated into the computer world.
I think we’re all taking this a little too seriously. Just like the way those tagging things were meant as a joke (albeit a stupid one) this was meant in good fun. Menat to say: people, those are annoying some of us. So if you’re gonna keep tagging people, fine, whatever, just give it a little thought. Tagging friends something because of an inside joke is one thing, tagging a sort of friend as the slow one is kind of thoughtless.
And for those of you on the other side: yes. labeling people is stupid. Immature. But it’s what we do… it makes us feel comfortable. And it’s gonna keep happening with or without the cartoons. So fight labeling! Go for it! But don’t try to make this petition about fighting against putting people in boxes if that’s not how you live the rest of your life. (That’s not meant to accuse you… but if the shoe fits, wear it.)
So yeah, this petition thing got a little wound up, I think, but it was also a good reminder to me not to be putting people in compartments, so thanks.
P.S. has anybody out there ever read the book Personal Views? it’s related to this.

POSTED BY: erin on March 16th, 2009 12:28 am

i agree tagging people like that is a waste of time and could really hurt somebody.

POSTED BY: cody on March 16th, 2009 7:10 pm

i had that same thing happen to me and not only do i not like being labelled the “friend” that did it to me never sees me and labelled me as something I AM NOT. so my point…if you are going to label a friend first of all expect to not be a friend anymore and second of all label them as something plausible for god sake.
those pictures are stupid its annoying enough trying to find where the hell they tagged you and seriously arent we supposed to be connecting on sites like facebook rather then catigorizing?? grrr im anoyed.

POSTED BY: Steph on March 23rd, 2009 4:04 pm

wow its a just a little fun. lets not get to excited over some cartoons.

POSTED BY: D on March 25th, 2009 4:06 pm

Josh, I hear ya there. I am getting annoyed by the nonsense that comes from my friends. One day I saw like 16 notifications and it was all connected to that picture, but yet everyone thinks they have to pass the chains along. I didn’t delete the friend that sent it because I was a close friend, but I removed the tag. I started to seriously evaluate my friend list because there are some people’s nonsense that I can’t take anymore.

POSTED BY: Chad on March 26th, 2009 8:59 pm

wow…ironically my friend tagged me in this same thing as “The Lazy One”
lol

POSTED BY: Pickles on March 30th, 2009 10:40 pm

I think you guys are getting carried away. Why have a petition over SUCH a little thing? If you don’t like what they tagged you as, just untag yourself! And anyways, what do you expect facebook to do?? How can they filter out all those cartoon pictures? Even if a ton of people agreed with you, there’s no way to stop the tagging. Also, it’s quite fun to see what people tag you as and what they tag others as.

POSTED BY: Moni on April 1st, 2009 4:38 am

My friend, who is a pastry chef, who doesn’t quite understand the concept of facebook for, like, adults (or wanna-be adults, like myself)…so she puts up one of these with a bunch of South Park-looking characters, and then tags me as “the Pothead” for the whole e-world to see.

I should make one and tag her as “the girl with absolutely no professional tact”.

POSTED BY: allie on April 6th, 2009 2:46 pm

wow. how could you devote so much time into something so rediculous? a petition? you want to stop the whole world from posting this silly little thing on myspace?
kinda selfish. and you just up and deleted your friend for it? damn.

POSTED BY: pj on April 15th, 2009 11:57 pm

WHAT? grow a set of balls, you fragile bitches. you cant look at that picture and say “fuck it, it’s a picture”? life must really way heavy on your shoulders.

POSTED BY: shaquile on April 16th, 2009 12:08 am

OK. I’ve been tagged as “the one who likely never leaves home without his/her trusty pet hunting beetle.” Do I need help?

I’m not kidding, see here: http://reface.me/photos/wacko-wednesday-tag-your-victorian-friends-on-facebook/

POSTED BY: Fran on April 24th, 2009 6:51 am

I think its funny. And if someone put you as the slow one, there is probably a hint of truth to it as you are slow to understand its just an image with words and was made as a joke. They’re friggn cartoons, get real!

POSTED BY: aaron on June 12th, 2009 4:25 pm

POSTED BY: donald duck dunn on July 17th, 2009 12:46 pm

If you are that sensitive maybe you should stay off of facebook. Better yet, maybe you should never leave your house and risk being called a name. The majority of people enjoyed passing that picture around and got a kick out of what their friends thought.

POSTED BY: Russ on August 7th, 2009 10:57 am

Oh stop the b*tching! It’s all in fun with a hint of reality about how your “friends” really feel about you. I bet you wouldn’t mind if you were “the pretty one.”
