Hey Josh, I’m Worried I’ll Have to Give Up My Dream

Hey Josh,

I really need some help in the career area. Well anyway, what’s up is I’ve been wanting to become a physio for several years, but when I was 17 my dad didn’t let me do YR 12 because he thought that business was for me, but I never wanted to be chained to a boring desk. That would never be purposeful for me. Well, dad does not live in the household anymore so it’s just me and my mum.

This year I decided to make my dream my goal and make it become reality so I’ve been doing YR 12 part time. Anyway because I have to look for a full time job or centerlink will not pay me, I’m stuck because they say I must get a full time job and I have to quit my course which means quitting my dream. I don’t know what to do and they don’t accept part time work either. I don’t want to sound like I’m whining but if I study full time I can’t pay my bills.

What should I do? I’m also wondering, could sponsorship be an option and how would I get it. I don’t want to give up on my dreams and reality is I have 10 weeks till my exams and then I will work as many hours as they demand my work. Really need HELP, don’t know how I’m gonna solve this problem and finish my course.

Hey Josh, Prom Makes Me Want to Puke

Promlem #4 from Kaela:

“I hate dancing and I am uncomfortable with many aspects of school dances. I have issues with crowds, strobe lights, and did I mention crowds? Severe issues. Dances make me physically sick. In the weeks leading up to dances, I develop eating problems and give up on schoolwork (even getting detention on purpose).

If I am forced to go to a dance, I have a panic attack and spazz out, shaking and whimpering, which of course makes me look rather undignified. My friends don’t understand and they probably feel insulted when I refuse to dance with them. My boyfriend accepts my fear of dances but I still feel guilty.

Telling me ‘just go to the dance’ will not help unless you think throwing up in public is a good idea. And honestly? I don’t want to change. I just want to know how to help my friends accept and understand me.”

09 Rad Prom Tips for ‘09

01. Hygiene is important. Perhaps on prom night more than ever. Take time to bathe.

02. Rent a limo. Can’t afford a limo? Borrow your parents car. Can’t talk them into loaning it to you? Clean your car out. Your date does not want taco bell wrappers stuck to her high heels.

03. Avoid the urge to dance in the center of a circle of prom-goers at all costs unless a) you are Justin Timberlake, b) you are blatantly trying to be funny, or c) you want your date to ignore you the rest of the night.

Hey Josh, My Teacher Called me a Failure

Hey Josh,

I need to ask you something. My English teacher called my whole class (of advanced students) failures. She said that all but maybe 3 of us will flunk out or drop out of college! This kind of enraged me because it reminded me of my third grade teacher who almost shattered my dreams of becoming a pro skateboarder (which I’m still going for).

How do I take this? Do I just sit back and let it happen? Or should I tell her off? Oh, and by the way, this is probably the third time she has said this.

Thanks,
R.J.

How to Enjoy Your Date When Mom or Dad Chaperone – Part 1

bodyguard1

So you’ve met someone you’re really into. They’ve got the 4 things you look for: hot looks, cool personality, book smarts, and a hilarious disposition. Bingo! You’re in there like swimwear.

Now it’s time to go on that first date and who insists on coming along but Mom or Dad. Ugh! The agony! How are you supposed to get your groove on when the ‘rents are tagging along?? Sure, they may be needed to chauffeur you around, but you know their main motive is to chaperone. Of course they have your best interest at heart and they know you’re responsible, but it can be irritating when you’re trying to do your own thing. Here’s how to make the best of this unfavorable situation:

  • Put it in perspective for them. Remind Mom or Dad that you are on an actual date. That means no embarrassing stories about how you used to fart to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb when you were a little eight years old.
  • Get some space. Let Mom or Dad know that you are attempting to get to know your new boo, and you can’t do that if they are going to be all in your business during the date. One of my first dates was at a concert. My mom and older sis came along but Mom purchased their tickets all the way on the other side of the arena. The only time we saw them was before and after the concert. It worked out great. If you’re going to the movies, ask Mom or Dad to sit in another theatre or see something else. That way, you both get what you want. You get to have your space and Mom or Dad get to tag along and make sure things are going smoothly.

Join us for Part 2 of this series where we will discuss how to establish a code and be cool with Mom or Dad just a stone’s throw away from you and your date. Ciao!

Hey Josh + LOL Advice Questions

Hey Josh,

Can you make the goat less addictive? I found my mouse pointer running circles around the goat at the bottom of your site making the laser beams appear every split second… and for a second I was completely amused =o

Or you can make it more addictive and change the color of the beams every time the mouse hovers over the goat… ? Maybe…? Awesome.

You rock! Maybe next time I’ll actually ask for real advice =)

No Cats Were Hurt In The Writing Of This Post

I spend a lot of time trying to figure out whether I should be friends with someone or not.  Are they a good person?  Will they be there when I need them?  Will this friendship last?  It’s difficult stuff to figure out, and only today have I come up with a way to solve the problem.  Instead of trying to figure out someone’s personality or look deep into their soul, I just show them this video and see what they say.

If someone doesn’t like a video of a cat in a box with Japanese writing on it, I’m just not sure the friendship is going to work.  Think about it:  what kind of person would not find this funny.  Since I posted the video, I watched it two more times.  It’s a cat jumping into a box.  No one gets hurt, and you get to see little cat legs sticking out of a box.  Everyone wins.

7.25 Cool Reasons to C.R.A.M. as a Student

Professional athletes recognize the importance of playing at their best. They realize that their individual performance has a direct impact on their team and organization. If they play at their finest or play their game ‘A’ Game, everyone will notice. It is at these times that they seem unstoppable.  Besides athletics, this peak-performing zone can too be experienced in other areas of life – in business, in relationships, in leadership, and es-pecially in the field of academics.

Most high school and college students desire to be at the top; however, their work hab-its and level of discipline do not always support their scholastic desires. Most desire to have the best grades, the best GPA, the best of friends and to be a part of the best ac-tivities.  But what causes one student to perform poorly and another to play his or her ‘A’ Game? Well today I’m going to show you how to C.R.A.M. your way into playing your ‘A’ Game.

Now you are probably thinking, “Cramming isn’t that successful. I can’t cram my way to a 4.0.”  Your thoughts are valid but I want to propel your life as a student and as an indi-vidual person by bringing you to a higher level of thinking.  You’re probably very familiar with cramming.  Most students do it, stay up late the night before a big test and cram as much information into your brain at the last minute. A few things to consider about this type of cramming is one, it hardly ever works and two it doesn’t work at the last minute.  BUT, if used at the proper time, C.R.A.M.ming can bring forth great results.

Take this example from my college years.  As a Freshman Chemistry major at Norfolk State University, I made some bad academic decisions. I was a P.P. – a Professional Procrastinator. I would wait until the last minute to do everything.  I waited until the last minute to study notes, prepare for tests, work on homework and finish reports. I procrastinated so much, I waited until the last minute to go to the cafeteria to eat. This last minute lifestyle forced me to have many “cram sessions,” pull “all-nighters” and sometimes I missed meals.
Since I was on an academic scholarship, I realized in order to maintain my scholarship and graduate with honors, my poor study habits and lack of time management was go-ing to have to change. This became further apparent when I had to repeat exams with headaches and aching body pains.  During the exam, I would feel sluggish and crappy; like I had a serious hangover.  I actually did – a hangover from the previous night of cramming, drinking bottles of root beer, eating candy bars and greasy pizza all for the sake of trying to stay awake to focus.

Reports have shown that cramming or “last-minute studying” causes unhealthy symp-toms. If you are a consistent crammer, you can testify to the following:

  • Your anxiety level increases tremendously.
  • You lose sleep and eat poorly.
  • You are accessible to get sick more easily.
  • You are tardy or even miss the exam time.
  • You take the more difficult essay make-up exam, because you missed original exam.
  • You simply fail the exam.
  • You perform worse on the exam than you would have otherwise. Guaranteed.

Last minute cramming does not work because of a few biological reasons. When cram-ming occurs, information is stored in the short-term memory side of the brain. This is where everyday information that is not really worth remembering is stored. In order to learn we have to transfer information into the long-term memory side of the brain. Here information can be retrieved far easier and is stored over a longer period of time. Let’s further examine the difference between short-term and long-term memory.

All information is processed in the brain and stored in short term memory. When the short-term memory overloads the braid with information, you can start to forget it. Can you remember what you had for breakfast two days ago, or the outfit you wore this past weekend? What about the price of your lunch on Monday? No? Long – term memory is the type of memory used when we want to store information in a more permanent way. This is either done by making information especially memorable or by consistent repeti-tion. Have you ever tried to remember the lyrics to your favorite song? How many times did you listen to that song or read the lyrics before you finally remembered it? The same should be true for your class work. Once something is transferred from short term to long term memory we successfully say it has been learned, or at least remembered. So with understanding long-term and short-term memory, you understand why cramming is pointless, it will always leave you coming up short.

C.R.A.M. as I have termed it can be translated into a simple four-word phrase – Consis-tent Reiteration for Advantageous Memorization. It is imperative that you study your class work (C.R.A.M) every single day, even if it is for a few minutes.  Your current occupation is a “student” and you will have this job title until you graduate; so see school as your 9 to 5 job.  When it’s time to study a class subject, work just as if it were your full-time job, making sure you check-in and out at a certain time each day. You should have daily C.R.A.M. sessions throughout the school term so the information can transfer to long-term memory.

My main reason for addressing this issue of cramming versus C.R.A.M.ming, is to im-press upon you to develop DAILY DISCIPLINES. The thing you give your attention to the most, will be the thing that controls your mindset and memory bank. You have what it takes to play your “A” Game every school term. Just don’t wait until the last minute to cram, C.R.A.M. every single day with a planned regimen.
Many students fail because they fail to plan. To better your grades, you must have a de-tailed plan of attack and mastery over your daily schedule. Here are 7.25 cool reasons to C.R.A.M. as a student:

1. You will be better prepared for quizzes, tests and exams.
2. You will retain more information to use later rather than learning it for a test, then for-getting it.
3. You will rest and sleep better.
4. You will be more confident and less anxious about exams, tests or quizzes.
5. You will be healthier, focused and more alert during the exam.
6. You will not have to repeat the exam, or take that silly essay makeup exam.
7. You will become the student others want to study with because you know the class material.
7.25 You will have better grades and a great GPA.

7.25 Winning Ways to Prepare for Tests and Pass Every School Exam

Preparing for tests, studying for midterms and taking final exams traditionally presents students a challenge. With so many things taking place before test time, there seems to be a rush of adrenaline that brings fear, stress and anxiety. I experienced these same symptoms, until I learned how to prepare for taking a test.  Understanding how to prepare for test or exams is a vital academic skill that every student must develop.

Here are 7.25 very effective ways to prepare for and pass those ex-ams:

1. ASK THE INSTRUCTOR – When was the last time you just walked into your teacher’s office and asked, “What should I expect on the test? What material will be covered? Will the test be in essay format? What should I concentrate on when study-ing?” Sounds simple but many students miss this basic step.  What’s the worst thing the teacher can say, I’m not telling?

2. LOOK UP PREVIOUS TESTS – I can assure you that what you are being tested on has been tested before. So check with your library or with students who have taken the class before to see if old exams are available. This can give you a general idea of what to expect. This should only be used for preparation – don’t rely heavily on test format.

3. MAKE YOUR OWN TEST – Put yourself in your Professor’s shoes and make up your OWN test.  From everything your instructor has talked about, write down on paper ten questions you think would be great test questions, and then answer them.

4. REVIEW YOUR NOTES – Reread all highlighted sections of your text and notes. Don’t re-read the entire text, just highlighted areas that are also in your notes. If possi-ble, make up test questions from these highlighted notes as mentioned above. If you are still having challenges taking good notes, then rewrtire all of your notes on one sheet of paper to make notes-notes.

5. CALL A STUDY GROUP – Gather 5 people or less, form a circle and have a true “TEST PARTY”. One by one have each person ask a potential test question and indi-vidually answer the question. This will help you prepare your answers and see how oth-ers are answering the question. At the end of the party, discuss among your classmates all the correct answers and why.

6. GET A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP – Sleeping is so amazing. It refreshes the body and refreshes your mind to think stronger and more clearly. Check out my previous article, ‘Sleeping Your Way To Better Grades’ at my academic success blog to see why this step is so important to your academic success.

7. EAT LIGHTLY – This is really simple but really needed. Don’t bog your tummy down with greasy foods; eat something in the morning that is living (fruit vegetables, pure juices). This will help get your “motor” running. Similar to putting dirty gas in your car – get it?

7.25 HAVE A WINNING ATTITUDE – Missing this step alone has caused many stu-dents to fail their exams. However you envision yourself,  that you will be.  If your inner voice is saying, “You will fail,” then in most cases you will fail. As a cheerleader is to a football team, you must be to your attitude.  After preparing and properly studying for the exam, cheer yourself up and tell yourself that you can Play YOUR “A” Game and ace this exam. I believe you can and YOU must believe you can.

Well there it is, some simple things you can do to pass those exams and tests. I would love to hear how you have done. Leave me a comment or email me at info@playingyouragame.com.

7.25 Ways to Set and Achieve All of Your Academic Goals

When you think about achieving SUCCESS, you have to think about setting and achieving GOALS.  When you think about achieving ACADEMIC SUCCESS, you must think about setting and achieving ACADEMIC GOALS.  Achieving SUCCESS EQUALS setting and achieving GOALS.

You cannot achieve success without working towards something that is measurable, memorable and attainable. Goals allow you to gauge when you have achieved success.  During my sophomore year of college, I received a 4.0 GPA. How did I achieve aca-demic success that year?  I learned the power of setting academic goals. Because I set this goal, I had to develop various academic survival skills like taking notes, studying for exams, and knowing how to listen in class. I had to change specific academic and social habits in order to achieve success.  I changed my study habits, my sleeping patterns and even my dating routine  – yes “girls” had to take the back seat.

I achieved academic success that year because I set an academic goal and this goal became the motor (or motive) behind how I functioned as a student and today you can do the same. What I mean is this…

By establishing academic goals that are PRESENT, POSITIVE, and PERSONAL, all the required academic survival skills of listening in class, taking great notes, class participa-tion, etc. will become the needed actions to support the goal you have initially set for yourself. They become the action steps required to achieve your goals.

Do you have goals? What is it that you want to accomplish in school? What is it that you want to accomplish in life? What do you consider to be successful? How do you meas-ure the success of a good school year?

Now what are you willing to adjust for your goals? My favorite book, the Bible says, “Where there is no vision the people perish” and it also says “write the vision and make it plain, so that all who see it can run with it”.  Your goals are your vision. And your vi-sion helps you focus on the final destination. Your goals are like the final destination on MapQuest.

To clarify setting academic goals and accomplishing them, here are 7.25 things to con-sider in your goal setting program:

1. Your academic goals must be personal.
What do YOU really want to accomplish? What is it that YOU desire in school? What do YOU desire from your social activities? What do YOU desire for your life? Not what someone else wants you to desire.

2. Your academic goals must not contradict any of your other goals.
Your goals must coincide in what is realistically possible. It is unrealistic to set this goal, “I have an overall 4.0 GPA, when I graduate from school” if you have already completed a few semesters with a 2.5 GPA. Mathematically there is no way to accomplish this goal. Setting unrealistic goals is setting realistic failure.

3. You academic goals must be specific.
Develop goals that are measurable; ones that can be reported and charted over time. Here’s an example: “I read two books a month that are non-school related.”

4. Your academic goals must be positive.
Positive goals help your subconscious carry out the goals stated. Your mind and sub-conscious should only interpret positives. Words like “not”, “never”, or “no” should be erased so your subconscious can produce the wisdom to carry out only positive goals.  Rather than saying, “I will NOT fail this test” say “I  make a minimum of 90% on this exam.”

5. Your academic goals must be set high, but reachable.
There’s a famous quote that says, “If you shoot for the moon and miss, you will still land amongst the stars.”  Set your goals really high, so that it forces you and stretches you to do better.

6.  Your academic goals must be present-tense.
Set goals in the present tense. Past-tense and future-tense goals cause your mind to think in the past and the future.  This keeps your goals locked in the past and in the fu-ture. Set goals that are present where your subconscious can work as if the goal is al-ready achieved. “As a man thinks so is he”. Think positive, personal, and present.

7. Your academic goals must be clearly written.
Using the notes above, make sure you specify your goals on paper. Write them down legibly. Studies have shown that people who write goals are 50-80% closer to attaining them than those who don’t have them written down.

7.25. Your academic goals must be connected with practical actions.
For every goal you set, identify some practical things that you can do everyday to help you obtain that goal. If you set a goal like the one above, to make 90% on the test, then you must have an action plan.  To obtain this goal, actions like spending two hours a day studying, visiting your teacher once a week, reading other books on the subject matter and working extra subject problems. These are the actions to your goals.

Goal Setting and Goal Achieving is the hidden secret to the world’s most successful people. By applying the above, you have the keys to accomplish whatever you desire out of your academic career and your future life endeavors.
